The Lighthouse Montessori School

TLMS is a passionate effort of Ms. Monal who envisioned to start an authentic Montessori School to promote Montessori Principles and Techniques among children in India and hence it’s not just a preschool but also a place for children to learn and become a civilized citizen of the world.

TLMS’s first school was set up at Ahmedabad in 2020 with complete Montessori Apparatus and a beautiful & peaceful environment for children of age groups 2.5 years to 6 years.

The classroom settings, apparatus and the methodology are all based on genuine Montessori principles.

Montessori Philosophy & Method

Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play.
The Montessori Method of education was developed by Italian physician Dr. Maria Montessori.

About Dr Maria Montessori

Dr Maria Montessori was born in the year 1870 in Italy. In a profession completely dominated by males, she completed her medical education in 1896 and became one of the first female doctors in Italy. During her tenure in working with education of mentally challenged children, Dr Montessori created practical apparatus and equipment which enhanced the children’s sensorial abilities and thus improved their learning skills. Later on, when she got the opportunity to teach normal children in her own House of Children, known as “Casa Dei Bambini”, she further refined her methods. The children in these schools showed remarkable ability to learn and could read and write by the age of five. The Montessori Method got a lot of prominence and spread rapidly throughout Europe and in America in pre-war era.Dr Maria Montessori was born in the year 1870 in Italy. During the war, she spent nearly 7 years in India and had numerous exchanges of ideas with Gandhiji and Tagore. Here she developed the concept of inter-relationship of all things in nature, which led to the development of concept of “Cosmic Education” and “Education for peace”.

The Montessori Method gave a new opportunity to children for learning, who were otherwise deprived of any means of meaningful education. In 1914 she wrote, “I did not invent a method of education, I simply gave some little children a chance to live”.

“The most important period of life is not the age of University studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six”

“If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children”

Key Aspects of Montessori Philosophy

TLMS follows a curriculum based entirely on Montessori method of education. As the name suggests, this method was developed by Dr Maria Montessori

Sensitive Period

The period of early childhood (0-6 years) are the formative years where children learn directly by interaction with external environment. The child explores the environment through his/her senses – touch, hearing etc. During this period, learning occurs spontaneously; Montessori named this as the “sensitive period” of learning.

"Child Centred" Philosophy

At the age of 2.5 to 3 years, when a child enters the kindergarten, he/she in not capable of reading or writing. Further, each child comes from different cultural and economic background, with different upbringing and thus they are at different stages of development. The Montessori environment gives them the opportunity to explore the world in their own way. This is in sharp contrast to the normal education styles where children are made to read and do the same thing in a group. “follow the Child” is the guiding principle of Montessori method of education.

Prepared Environment

In order to ensure the holistic development and learning of children, they need to be provided with an ideal environment, which involves the classroom, teaching apparatus along with proper teachers and methodology. All this put together is termed as “prepared environment” in Montessori Terminology.
